Vickie Graham, HelpLine Director The HelpLine is a 24-hour service for all residents of Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas park. Each year approximately 31,000 people die by their own hand. The first full week in May is designated as National Suicide Prevention Week. This is a good time to serve as a reminder to learn all we can about suicide prevention, intervention, and post-vention. In keeping with that, the staff at HelpLine is available to give presentations or trainings on the topic, tailored to your needs. Remember, most suicidal persons do not want to die; they just want the pain to end. Months ago at HelpLine a volunteer took a call from a 12-year-old boy. He was suicidal. The call lasted 20 minutes, a very long 20 minutes. The child had a number of issues going on in his life, none of which could be solved in a 20-minute phone conversation. The volunteer did not have all the answers, but he did have the time - time to just listen to the concerns of a 12-year-old boy.
